Beavers set for in-state rivalry showdown at UMary

MINOT, ND -- Coming off a tight 24-17 battle last time out, the Minot State Beavers hit the road this weekend for a rivalry clash in Bismarck, visiting the University of Mary Marauders on Saturday at 2:00 pm.

Minot State (2-6, 2-5 NSIC) and UMary (3-5, 2-5 NSIC) renew their in-state rivalry for the first time since 2023, with the Beavers holding an 8-5 lead in the all-time series. The most recent matchup saw the Marauders edge out Minot State 27-23 in Bismarck.

Head coach Ian Shields emphasized what this rivalry means for both programs.

"Obviously it's a big game — they're all big — but this one has regional meaning and pride involved," Shields said. "A lot of history, a lot of families and alums connected on both sides. That's the great thing about college football. There's always a little something extra when you're playing for a trophy."

The Beavers have been competitive in nearly every contest this season, including several games decided by one possession. With the season entering its final month, Shields says execution remains the key to flipping narrow results.

"We've moved the ball successfully against most people this year — now we have to finish more drives with touchdowns," Shields said. "We can't beat ourselves. If we take care of the football, we're pretty hard to handle."

Minot State's rushing attack continues to be its identity, averaging more than 300 yards per game over its last seven outings. The young offensive line, featuring four freshmen starters, has developed significantly throughout the season, allowing for consistent ground success from running backs Evan Lovett and Devan Daniels and quarterback Carson Chrisman.

Defensively, Minot State's front has found a rhythm, applying more pressure while limiting explosive plays.

"Our defensive front has been playing well — they're physical and getting after the quarterback," Shields noted. "We've got a group that's growing. Things are clicking more each week."

The Marauders rely on a balanced and creative offensive system capable of scoring in multiple ways, while their defense features size and athleticism that can disrupt drives.

"They present a lot of problems on both sides of the ball," Shields said. "Their offense is diverse — they can run it, they can spread you out — and defensively they're big and well-coached. It'll be a challenge."

Possession and turnover margin may be the deciding factors in a matchup where both programs pride themselves on controlling the ball and the clock. Entering the weekend, both teams average more than 33 minutes of possession per game.

"In a rivalry game between two evenly matched teams, it usually comes down to turnovers and special teams," Shields added. "If we protect the football and create takeaways, we'll give ourselves a great chance."

With two games remaining in NSIC play after Saturday, the Beavers will look to build momentum down the stretch and reclaim the rivalry trophy until the next matchup.

"There's still a lot to play for," Shields said. "Our guys are excited for this opportunity."

Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday in Bismarck.
