MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State men's hockey team won a close battle with rival Jamestown on Saturday night, completing a weekend sweep of the visiting Jimmies.
Scoreless halfway through the contest, the 3
rd-ranked Beavers got a pair of power-play goals for a 2-0 advantage, then fended off a comeback by No. 9 Jamestown for a 2-1 win at the Maysa Arena.
Minot State (9-1-1 overall, 6-1-0 MCH) also topped Jamestown 3-1 on Friday night and has won 3-of-4 between the in-state rivals this season, with the lone setback an overtime win by the Jimmies last month.
Sheldin Howard broke the scoreless tie with 9 minutes, 35 seconds left in the second period, scoring a power-play goal off assists by
Logan Rands and
Matthew Yakubowski.
Joey Moffatt then made it a 2-0 contest just 2:33 into the third period as he finished off another power-play goal set up by Yakubowski and Howard.
Jamestown closed within a goal with 12:05 left in the game with a power-play goal of its own, but
William Dyke made 14 saves on 15 shots to stave off a Jimmie comeback.
Minot State now heads to Chicago for the ACHA Showcase next weekend, playing UNLV on Friday, Utah on Saturday, then wrapping up the Showcase playing Arizona State on Sunday.
