Minot State rallies late, but falls to Simon Fraser 68-62

LANGLEY EVENTS CENTRE, Langley --The Minot State women's basketball team took a 47-46 lead into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 68-62 to the Simon Fraser Red Leafs at Sunday.

The Beavers (0-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Taryn Hamling, who had 16 points and two steals. Maya Aguilar tacked on 15 points and six rebounds and Jessica Mogen helped out with 10 points.

The Minot State offense was very productive from beyond the arc, pouring in eight threes on 30 attempts. Hamling was the most prolific shooter for the Beavers, draining four treys in the contest.

Minot State's defense held Simon Fraser to only 38.2 percent shooting from the field.

How It Happened

After falling behind 8-5, Minot State went on a 9-0 run with 3:44 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Tiyahna Trottier, to take a 14-8 lead. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-12 advantage. Minot State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 17 points close to the basket.

Simon Fraser fought back to tie the game at 19-19 before Minot State went on a 5-0 run starting at the 5:29 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Aguilar, to take a 24-19 lead. The Red Leafs cut into that lead, but the Beavers still enjoyed a 29-27 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State dominated in the paint, scoring six of its 12 points close to the basket.

Minot State surrendered its halftime lead until, with the game tied at 36-36 they went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Lorelei Nelson, to grab a 41-36 lead with 2:40 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Red Leafs had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Beavers still entered the fourth quarter with a 47-46 edge. Minot State knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 18 total points.

Simon Fraser then erased the Minot State lead in the game's final quarter for a 68-62 comeback victory. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.
