Yale scores 20 points in Minot State's 78-73 loss to Mary

BISMARCK, ND --Carson Yale scored 20 points, but the Minot State men's basketball team fell to the Mary Marauders 78-73 on the road Tuesday.

The Beavers (3-2, 0-1) had four players score in double figures, led by Yale, who had 20 points, six rebounds, two steals, and two blocks. Isaiah Alexander added 17 points, six rebounds and six assists, and Deuce Benjamin helped out with 14 points and six assists.

Led by Alexander's four offensive rebounds, Minot State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in eight second chance points.

Minot State's defense held Mary to only 33.8 percent shooting from the field, including 25 percent from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

Minot State started out the scoring by going on a 14-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Sean De Kovachich, to take an early lead with 15:18 left in the first half. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 33-26 advantage. Minot State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 20 of its 33 points close to the basket.

Following intermission, Minot State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 42-31 before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Benjamin's three, to grow the lead to 50-31 with 14:46 to go in the contest. Mary then asserted control, outscoring the Beavers 47-23 the rest of the way to hand Minot State the 78-73 loss. Minot State made the most of nine offensive rebounds to tack on six second chance points.

Coaches Comments
Head Coach Randall Herbst, after the loss, said "We let one get away from us - you've got to have some great toughness on the road" he said, "Momentum can be good and bad. Had a pretty good 25 minutes of play but gave the opponent way too many extra possessions and opportunities on the glass, and with turnovers. We lost the battle of 50/50 balls as well. Stay together and keep fighting".
