TUCSON, Ariz. – The Minot State baseball team scored early and often, then held strong to topple Winona State 10-9 in a non-conference contest in Arizona on Tuesday.
Oscar Pegg was a one-man wrecking crew for the Beavers (6-4 overall, 2-2 NSIC) as he went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, and 5 RBIs in the victory.
The two teams will meet again in NSIC doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday in Arizona.
Minot State got things rolling in the top of the first as
Connor Hill singled and scored, Pegg plated two with a double, then
Javier Gutierrez made it 4-0 with an RBI single before the Warriors (6-2, 4-0) even grabbed a bat.
Winona State got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning, but the Beavers went back to work in the third and fourth innings, padding the lead.
Shane Kary and
Michael Williamson each singled home a run and
Seungjun Song added an RBI groundout in the top of the third, then Pegg blasted a 3-run home run in the top of the fourth for a 10-2 Minot State lead.
Then it was hang-on time as the Warriors got three back in their half of the fourth, two more in the sixth, and closed to 10-9 down in the eighth before Minot State shut down the comeback to score the win.
Brent Riddle added three hits in the victory, while Madas and Williamson each had a pair of base knocks for the Beavers.
Devin Marton (2-0) earned the win for Minot State, pitching a scoreless fifth inning and striking out two, and
Conner Meldrim pitched a perfect ninth, striking out two to earn his first save of the season.
Minot State is back in action Wednesday with two more non-NSIC contests in Arizona against league rivals, playing Southwest Minnesota State and Northern State.
