Beaver baseball battles back for twinbill split at Wayne State

WAYNE, Neb. – Bouncing back from a slow start to the day, the Minot State baseball team used a late rally to win game two of an NSIC doubleheader at Wayne State to split the day's twinbill.
 
After falling 8-3 in the opener, Oscar Pegg's RBI single in the top of the ninth inning capped a late comeback and an 8-7 win for Minot State to close out the day.
 
Minot State (11-7 overall, 6-4 NSIC) is back in action for another doubleheader at Wayne State (10-9, 6-4) on Sunday starting at noon.

WAYNE, Neb. -- Senior Grant Gabbert went 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI for the Minot State Beavers in an 8-3 loss to the Wayne State Wildcats on Saturday in NSIC action.
 
Junior Colton Bagshaw (2-1) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. Junior Griffin Shearon was a bright spot for the Beavers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing three innings, giving up one run on one hit, with four walks and three strikeouts.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers were trailing 8-0 in the seventh inning when they first put runs on the board. Gabbert's solo home run sparked a three-run rally that Michael Williamson capped with an RBI single.
 
GAME NOTES
» Minot State pitchers faced 33 Wayne State hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out four.

WAYNE, Neb. -- The Minot State Beavers responded from a 7-5 heading into the eighth inning to win in exciting fashion, earning an 8-7 victory over the Wayne State Wildcats Saturday.
 
Sophomore Conner Meldrim (2-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Minot State. The right-hander went 3.2 innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing two walks and striking out four. Sophomore Ayden Sauerbrei also pitched well, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out two to earn his second save of the season.
 
Offensively, the Beavers were led by junior Michael Williamson, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double, a home run and three RBI. Junior Oscar Pegg compiled a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Junior Shane Kary also contributed for Minot State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Beavers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning as Kary doubled home a run then he and Jake Orthner both scored on errors for a 3-0 lead.
 
The Beavers then held the Wildcats scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Minot State scored twice on Williamson's two-run homer, which brought the Beavers lead to 5-0.
 
Minot State's lead had disappeared once the eighth inning came around and turned into a 7-5 Wayne State advantage, when the Beavers tied up the game at seven. The Beavers scored two runs off of Wayne State pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of Williamson.
 
Tied 7-7 into the ninth inning, Minot State got moving again on offense as the Beavers scored the game-winner on an RBI single off the bat of Pegg, bringing the score to 8-7 in favor of Minot State.
