Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Minot State falls 74-73 to Tampa in Hawaii Tip-Off finale

HONOLULU, Hawaii --The Minot State men's basketball team got a 25-point showing from the bench, but fell 74-73 to the Tampa Spartans at McCabe Gym on Sunday night in the title game of the Hawaii Tip-Off Classic.

The Beavers (2-1) had four players score in double figures, led by Lovasoa Andriatsarafara, who had 16 points, seven rebounds, and six blocks. Sean De Kovachich added 11 points and Eden Hobbs helped out with 11 points off of the bench.

Minot State out-rebounded Tampa 47-37 in Sunday's game, paced by Jayse Boatwright's nine boards. The Beavers also collected 13 offensive rebounds and scored 11 second-chance points.

Minot State did a great job disrupting Tampa shots in the contest, coming away with eight blocks. Andriatsarafara's six rejections led the way individually for the Beavers. The six blocked shots were a new NCAA-era single-game team record and rank tied for 4th all-time. Andriatsarafara broke the NCAA-era record of 5 blocked shots in a game held by six different players. Kelvin Fraser holds the all-time single-game record of 12 blocked shots, which he set on February 19, 2011, against South Dakota Mines in Minot State's final season of NAIA play.

Minot State next plays at No. 6-ranked Black Hills State in the Dakota Challenge on Friday, November 13.

How It Happened
Down 15-10 early, Minot State went on an 8-0 run culminating in a 3-pointer from Sean De Kovachich to lead 18-15. A Jayse Boatwright basket pushed the Beaver lead to 33-25 before Minot State settled for a 33-27 halftime advantage.

The Beavers pushed the advantage to 39-29 on a Boatwright fastbreak layup early in the second half, then held off Tampa, which tied the game three times down the stretch until the final 23 seconds. With 23 seconds left, James LaFrance's 3 gave the Spartans their first lead since midway through the first half.

Minot State missed a shot for the win at the buzzer.

Minot State took care of business in the paint, recording 22 of its 40 points in the lane.
