JAMESTOWN, N.D. – For the third time this young season,
Katie Newberry was nearly untouchable in the circle for Minot State.
The junior transfer from Kankakee Community College spun her second shutout in her fourth appearance for the Beavers, striking out 9 in a 9-0, 5-inning win over host Jamestown on Thursday night.
The Jimmies regrouped and bested Minot State 9-2 in the non-conference doubleheader's nightcap, snapping a 5-game win streak for the Beavers.
Minot State (9-3 overall) now is off for a week and a half and returns to action in Florida on March 9, playing Malone (Ohio) and Ursuline (Ohio) that day in the Space Coast Spring Games tournament, the start of 12 games in Florida over 8 days for the Beavers.
In the opener Thursday night, Newberry (3-0) walked one, scattered two hits, and didn't allow a baserunner to reach second base.
She then benefited from one big Beaver rally as Minot State scored all 9 runs in the top of the third inning.
Sara Van Wickler doubled in a pair, igniting the rally, then
Paige Kellogg singled her home.
Maizy Whitlow added a 2-run double,
Ellington Anderson doubled home Whitlow, then she scored on
Brooke Hyde's RBI double for a 7-0 lead.
Hyde would score on a wild pitch, then Van Wickler added an RBI triple to left, capping the rally.
Van Wickler, Whitlow, and Hyde each had 2 hits apiece in the win.
Riding the momentum from the game one win, the Beavers started fast in game two as
Anna LaCount had an RBI single and
Navi Brinkerhoff added another RBI base hit for a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
But Minot State managed just two more hits the rest of the way as Jamestown (10-3) clamped down defensively, then chipped away on offense with 3 runs in the first, a solo run each in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, then three more runs in the sixth.
Whitlow and Hyde had the other base hits in the setback for the Beavers.
