MINOT, N.D. - Minot State's
Katie Newberry struck out 7, outdueling Jamestown pitcher Hope Ransome and leading the Beavers to a 2-1 win over the Jimmies on Friday afternoon inside the MSU Bubble.
The visiting Jimmies rallied to take the nightcap 4-1 as the teams split their NSIC doubleheader.
In the opener, Newberry (9-4) was outstanding for the Beavers, scattering 7 hits and not walking a batter in the win.
Ransome was equally good for the Jimmies, giving up six hits and striking out seven, as well, but the Beavers (27-17 overall, 12-8 NSIC) managed to cash in twice to score the win.
In the bottom of the first inning,
Taylor Smith doubled down the right-field line and came around to score the game's first run on a
Sara Van Wickler single, giving Newberry an early edge she never surrendered.
Minot State pushed its lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Van Wickler doubled, moved to third on a
Sarah Misner single, then scored on a passed ball.
Just enough for the victory as the Jimmies (27-16, 8-12) got a run in the top of the fifth, but no more against Newberry.
Van Wickler went 3-for-3 in the win to lead the Minot State offense.
In the nightcap, Minot State had chances with runners at second and third with no one out in the 2nd inning, and with a runner at third with one out in the 3rd, but did not score in either inning.
Down 2-0,
Brooke Hyde's RBI double in the bottom of the fourth inning got the Beavers as close as 2-1 back, but a two-run double by Sydney Grendler in the top of the sixth padded the Jimmies' lead as they grabbed the nightcap win.
Minot State is back in action Sunday as they head to Northern State for an NSIC doubleheader at noon.
