Gates’ Walk-Off Highlights Doubleheader Split for Minot State

Minot State split Wednesday's doubleheader with Northern State, walking off a 4-3 extra-inning win in Game 1 behind Vinnie Gates before falling 14-10 in a high-scoring Game 2, moving to 18-22 overall. The Beavers return to action April 25 at home against Bemidji State for a doubleheader beginning at noon.

GAME 1 |
MINOT, ND --The Minot State Beavers needed eight innings to finish the job, but secured the 4-3 extra-innings win, walking it off on a single off the bat of junior Vinnie Gates to claim victory over the Northern State Wolves Wednesday.

Senior Conner Meldrim (4-3) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Minot State (18-21, 13-16). The right-hander went one shutout inning while giving up one hit, allowing no walks and striking out one. Freshman Thomas Mitchell also made an impact on the mound for the Beavers, throwing three innings, giving up one run on two hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.

In the batter's box, the Beavers were led by Gates, who went 2-for-5 on the day with a home run and three RBIs. Senior Michael Williamson furnished a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Junior Cowen Meyer also chipped in for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 2-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the third inning. Minot State plated two runs when Gates left the yard with freshman Nate Larsen aboard.

The game remained tied until the very next inning, when the Beavers got going again on offense. Minot State picked up a run on Williamson's lead off home run off of freshman Maddox Plack, which brought the Beavers lead to 3-2.

Northern State then rallied to tie the ballgame at 3-3 before Minot State walked it off in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single off the bat of Gates.

Junior Jacob Thompson (2-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Minot State (18-22, 13-17). Junior Keith Shelton was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 2.2 shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out four.

Pegg went 1-for-3 with a home run and a walk in addition to his four RBIs for the Beavers. Senior Noah Madas put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 3-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Sophomore Wyatt Toth also helped out for Minot State, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a home run and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers were trailing 9-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Toth put Minot State on the board with a lead off home run off freshman Carson Zimmel.

The Beavers deficit grew to 10-1 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the third inning. Minot State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of junior Cowen Meyer, which brought the score to 10-2 in favor of the Wolves.

Northern State built their lead to 13-2 before the Minot State offense got back in action, reducing that lead to 13-7 in the fifth. The Beavers hit two home runs in the inning on the way to scoring five runs.

Minot State kept the Wolves off the board before narrowing the gap further in the sixth. Freshman Nate Larsencrossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Beavers, tightening the Northern State lead to 13-8.

Northern State built on their lead to 14-8 before the Beavers offense got moving, reducing that lead to 14-10 in the seventh. Minot State brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Larsen's single. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
