Beavers sweep Crookston, improve to 24-22

Minot State closed out a strong day on Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep at Minnesota Crookston, taking game one 6-4 before erupting for a 13-5 win in the nightcap to improve to 24-22 overall. The Beavers got key contributions throughout the lineup, highlighted by Noah Madas' four-RBI performance in game two, and now return home to Corbett Field for their final doubleheader of the regular season Friday at 1 p.m. against Sioux Falls.

GAME 1 |
CROOKSTON, Minn. --The Minot State Beavers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 6-4 victory against the Minnesota-Crookston Golden Eagles on Wednesday.

Freshman Thomas Mitchell (3-2) got the win out of the bullpen for Minot State (23-22, 17-17). The right-hander went 2.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits, allowing one walk and striking out four. Junior Ayden Sauerbrei also pitched well, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out one.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Minot State managed to push across two runs in the inning.

The Golden Eagles then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 2-1 until the Beavers expanded their advantage in the third. Minot State picked up two runs, including one on a solo round-tripper off the bat of junior Colton Bagshaw, which brought the score to 4-1 in favor of the Beavers.

Minnesota-Crookston narrowed Minot State's lead to 4-3 before the Beavers stretched the advantage to 5-3 in the fifth inning. The Beavers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of junior Cowen Meyer.

The Golden Eagles fought back, closing the gap to 5-4 until Minot State added some insurance in the sixth. The Beavers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior Jake Orthner, bringing the score to 6-4 in favor of Minot State. The score remained 6-4 for the rest of the game, as the Beavers held on for the win.

Junior Jacob Thompson (3-1) got the win for Minot State (24-22, 18-17). The right-hander went six innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on five hits, allowing two walks and striking out four. Senior Conner Meldrim also pitched well, going three innings, surrendering one run on two hits, walking none and striking out five.

Madas went 3-for-5 with a home run in addition to his four RBIs for the Beavers. Junior Cowen Meyer furnished a standout day at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a walk and two RBIs. Senior Jake Orthner also contributed for Minot State, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding a home run and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beavers were trailing 3-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board.

The game remained tied until the very next inning, when the Beavers got going again on offense. The Minot State offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Madas, which brought the Beavers lead to 7-3.

Minot State kept Minnesota-Crookston scoreless before expanding their lead to 8-3 the following inning. The Beavers added a run on Orthner's two-out solo home run off Lake Hagen.

The Golden Eagles fought back, closing the gap to 8-4 until Minot State added some insurance in the seventh. The Beavers recorded a run on Meyer's lead off home run off Hagen, bringing the score to 9-4 in favor of Minot State.

Minnesota-Crookston got within 9-5 until the Beavers scored again in the ninth inning to stretch its lead to 13-5. The Minot State offense piled up four runs, highlighted by a one-run ground out off the bat of freshman Nate Larsen. The score remained 13-5 for the rest of the game, as the Beavers coasted to the win.
