Beaver baseball falls in postseason opener to Minnesota State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Minot State Beavers were unable to get a clutch hit with runners in scoring position against Minnesota State pitcher junior Mack Crowley on Wednesday, despite recording eight hits, and were shut out 9-0 by the No. 16 Mavericks in the opener for both teams at the NSIC Tournament.

With the loss, Minot State (26-24) now faces in-state rival Mary on Thursday at noon in an elimination game. The Marauders fell 6-2 to Winona State in their opening game.

Junior Colton Bagshaw (5-5) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. The right-hander went six innings, giving up five runs, zero earned, on four hits, allowing four walks and striking out three.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Minot State went a total of 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position in the loss, with the best scoring opportunity coming in the fourth inning, when sophomore Wyatt Toth made it 90 feet away from scoring with two outs as Minot State left the bases loaded in the inning.

The Mavericks plated two runs in the first inning, added a run in the bottom of the third, then pushed the lead to 5-0 after the Beavers' missed opportunity in the top of the fourth. The score remained 5-0 until the bottom of the eighth when Minnesota State added four more runs.
