Rich McBride enters his third season as an assistant coach of the Minot State men’s basketball program in 2018-19.
McBride helped lead the Beavers to their best-ever season in the NCAA Division II era last year as Minot State recorded a 20-10 overall record and a 13-9 NSIC mark. The Beavers won their first-ever NSIC Tournament game and following the season senior Tyler Rudolph became the first Minot State player to earn All-America and NSIC Player of the Year honors.
In his first season, McBride helped lead the Beavers to a fourth place finish in the North division, securing Minot State’s first-ever Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament home game.
McBride last coached at the University of Illinois Springfield, where he spent three seasons as an assistant coach.
He began his coaching career at Lanphier High School in Springfield, Ill., his alma mater where he scored 2,068 points as a prep. He is Lanphier’s all-time leading scorer and is the leading scoring among Springfield’s Class AA players. In four seasons as an assistant coach, he helped Lanphier to a conference and city championship.
He moved on from Lanphier as a player to the Big Ten. McBride earned All-Big Ten honorable mention as a senior and was a part of the 2005 NCAA Final Four team at the University of Illinois. He was team captain and named the Illini’s Most Valuable Player in 2007. McBride finished his career at Illinois as the fifth winningest player in school history, playing in 104 wins during his four seasons.
McBride averaged 9.6 points, 2.3 assists and 2.0 rebounds during his senior campaign including 14 points against Virginia Tech in the NCAA Tournament First Round. His Illini teams advanced to the NCAA tournament in all four of his seasons.
He also has coaching experience at Green County (Ky.) High School and Cairo (Ill.) High School.
