Gary Walhaug

Gary Walhaug is entering the 2016-17 season for his 19th season as an assistant coach for the Minot State University women's basketball team.

Walhaug helped the Beavers finish fifth in the 2013-14 season in just their second full season in NCAA Division II and the Northen Sun Intercollegiate Conference. In the Beavers first season in the Northern Sun, 2012-2013, Walhaug helped the Beavers to a 13-14 overall record.

Walhaug has helped the Beavers to four national tournament appearances in seven years, including two runs to the NAIA national quarterfinals in 2008 and 2004.

Along with general assistant duties, Walhaug has been in charge of breaking down schematics on the offensive end. He has a keen eye on seeing how the offense will develop to get points on the board. His knowledge of the game and ability to teach the game to student-athletes has been invaluable to the Beavers success. Walhaug is normally assigned to the perimeter players, scout team and helps with game strategies and recruiting. Head coach Sheila Green Gerding refers to Walhaug as the "Brain" of the Beavers offense as he is an excellent strategist and offensive expert.

Walhaug is currently teaching business classes at Surrey High School in Surrey, N.D. He was the Mustangs head boys basketball coach for 16 years and head girls basketball coach for 17 years. He is one of only five coaches in North Dakota to reach the 300 victory milestone in girls basketball. Walhaug was inducted into the North Dakota Coaches Association in 2009.

He and his wife, Arlene, have two children, Laura and Scott.
