Beavers rebound over VCSU

Minot State shakes off loss Friday

Minot State sophomore Abbey Aide eyes the ball during a serve Saturday against Valley City State.
MINOT, N.D. – If there was any question about Minot State University's mindset after a tough loss to Jamestown College a night before, the Beavers answered them in game 1.
MSU had plenty of pep early on and carried that enthusiasm and hustle throughout its 3-0 win over visiting Valley City State Saturday at the MSU Dome.
The Beavers pushed to a 26-24 win in game 1 and did not look back winning 27-25 and 25-21 in a somewhat misleading three-game sweep.
“We gave up a point or two here and there, but we were much more consistent in the match than we have been,” Johnna Torr. “It was a tough match, but we made the plays.”
MSU not only got the same diversified offensive push that the Beavers have enjoyed during the second half of the season, they also got a boost from Chelsey Bryant (Fr., OH, Brandon, Manitoba) off the bench. Bryant played in game 2 and 3, collecting three kills on 13 total attempts. But it was her attitude for the game that caught Torr's eye.
“She has done a great job off the bench,” Torr said. “She comes off the bench with such enthusiasm and brings different things to the game. She is ready to play right away.”
Bryant had a big tip kill to push the Beavers lead to 23-21 in game 2.
While the MSU offense played well all night, the Beavers defense played one of its best matches of the season. MSU had 64 digs as a team and consistently got an extra hand on what looked like a killed ball.
Jen Moffatt (Fr., Libero, Brandon, Manitoba), Jen Dixon (Fr., OH, Brandon, Manitoba) and Jen Yausie (So., OH, Colonsay, Saskatchewan) got to more balls than they have in the past,” Torr said. “They didn't always make the play, but made the extra effort to get to those.”
Moffatt finished with a team-high 25 digs from her libero position. Dixon added 16 digs and Yausie added seven.
Dixon was again on offensive powerhouse, collecting a match-high 12 kills. Janice Rose Reinbolt (Jr., MH, Maple Creeke, Saskatchewan) finished with eight kills, Yausie added nine and senior Shari Dueck (RS, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) finished with seven each.
Leading the way for the Vikings was Kadee Melby who finished with 11 kills. Kelsey Hanson added 27 assists.
The Beavers head out on the road for much of the remainder of the season as they play five of their next six on the road with all five DAC games. MSU is at South Dakota Mines Friday and Black Hills State Saturday.
