MAYVILLE, N.D. – The Minot State University volleyball played an up and down match at Mayville State Friday in Dakota Athletic Conference play, but saved the best for last as they outlasted the Comets in a 3-2 win.
The Beavers fell behind 1-0 and 2-1 as Mayville won game 1 25-22 and game 3 25-15. Minot State countered with a 25-22 win in game 2 and a 25-15 win in game 4. The Beavers would complete the comeback with a solid 15-11 win in game 5.
“We did not play our best by any means, but we were able to capitalize on Mayville's weak moments,” said MSU assistant coach Ashley Henry. “They were always scrappy but we were pretty disorganized tonight.”
Henry filled in on the MSU bench for head coach Johnna Torr, who was not able to make the trip.
MSU got solid games from freshman
Jen Dixon (OH, Brandon, Manitoba) and
Jennifer Yausie (So., OH, Colonsay, Saskatchewan) as Dixon finished with 15 kills and Yausie added 13. Setting those two up was
Abbey Aide (So., Setter, Bottineau, N.D.) who finished with 37 assists in the contest.
“
Janice (
Reinbolt, Jr., OH, Maple Creek, Saskatchewan) and Abbey stayed positive when things were pretty bad and really brought us back into it,” Henry said. “
Annie Assel (Fr., MH, Bismarck, N.D.) also played well. She brought a really smart element to the game by placing the ball.”
Aide added three aces to her assists to pace MSU and
Jenna Moffatt (Fr., Libero, Brandon, Manitoba) finished with 28 digs to lead the defense.
MSU (7-5 DAC, 9-18 overall) continue an important road trip as the Beavers try to continue in the top half of the conference and secure a home playoff match. MSU plays at Dakota State Saturday beginning at 3 p.m.
