MINOT, N.D. – Even after a terrific start, Minot State University's women's volleyball team still found itself down 2-1 heading into game 4.
The Beavers responded.
MSU blitzed the Hardrockers 25-9 in game 4 and dug in for a 15-11 win in game 5 to take a Dakota Athletic Conference match 3-2 Saturday at the MSU Dome.
“They realized what they did last night and wanted to make improvements on it. They went out and tried to play hard and played consistent and confident,” said MSU head coach Johnna Torr. “It was huge for us to be able to go on a run towards the end of that game (4). And, then to keep pushing point for point… we have a habit of getting to point 20 and stopping.”
The Beavers didn't stop at 20 in game 1 either as MSU took an early lead 25-20. Mines battled back to even things at one with a 25-21 win and rallied after the break for a 25-23 win in game 3. But, MSU didn't hang its head after letting game 3 slip away.
“We tried to find consistency this week, and not let our mistakes get us down,” said Torr. “We have a habit of doing that – and from doing that last year. If we can break that (habit) and keep pushing point for point, I'm very happy.”
The Beavers got a consistent match from multiple players as
Jen Dixon (OH, Fr., Brandon, Manitoba),
Shari Dueck (Sr., RS, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan),
Jen Yausie (So., OH, Colonsay, Saskatchewan) and
Janice Rose Reinbolt (Jr., MH, Maple Creek, Saskatchewan) combined for 44 kills. Dixon (14), Yausie (12) and Dueck (11) all had double figure kills.
“Yausie was off a little bit in the beginning of the season, which put her on the bench for a while,” Torr said. “But when she plays at home, she plays big. Once she gets on that role – she did the same thing last year for us – she was on fire.
“I think Janice Reinbolt stepped up tonight. It was nice to have her running on all cylinders.”
Abbey Aide (So., Setter, Bottineau, N.D.) had 42 assists in the win and Dixon and
Jenna Moffatt (Fr., Libero, Brandon, Saskatchewan) had 15 digs apiece to lead MSU.
The Beavers are on the road for a nonconference match against NCAA Division II University of Mary Tuesday, before starting a three-match homestand with Dakota State Friday.
