DICKINSON, N.D. – Minot State University head wrestling coach
Robin Ersland want his team to learn a little quicker from mistakes.
The youthful Beavers have made big strides much of the season in the program's return to collegiate wrestling after a 20-year hiatus. But there are still some improvements Ersland believes need to be made.
“We have to stop making certain mistakes that are hurting us,” he said. “There are certainly things we need to learn from. It is at a point in the season where we need to get better and not make those mistakes.”
Such was the case Wednesday in a 41-6 dual loss to No. 12 ranked Dickinson State at Scott Gymnasium.
“I am happy with some of the things we did in individual matches,” Ersland said. “We are right there in a couple, but we would make a mistake and they capitalized on it.”
The Beavers lone win came from
Robert Herrera (So., Sarasota, Fla.) at 133 pounds. Herrera pinned Kevin Hansen one minute into the match. Herrera, who moved up to 133 from his normal 125 pound weight class, has been perfect on the mat since becoming eligible at the semester break.
“He's something else,” Ersland said. “He can get it done, that's for sure. He did a great job of moving up for us.”
While the Beavers didn't pick up any other wins, Ersland was happy with the performance from
Wade Weppler (Jr., Burlington, N.D.) at 197 and
Cristian Molina (Fr., Miami, Fla.) at 174. Weppler pushed George Hargrove at 197 before falling 17-11, while Molina had plenty of chances to defeat Brady Burgess at 174, but fell 5-3.
“Wade gave George all he could handle and actually had a couple of chances to win the match,” Ersland said. “And Cris had a great chance to win his match, but made one mistake and (Burgess) capitalized on it. We have to stop making that one mistake.
“You know, I was disappointed in the overall match, but there were some positives in there as well.”
The Beavers move back into open wrestling as they travel to Jamestown College for the Jamestown College Open Saturday at 9 a.m.
