MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University volleyball has been chasing .500 since a four-game losing streak following the Minnesota State Moorhead Tournament second week of the season.
The Beavers couldn't quite get there on two different occasions.
Not only was the third time the charm, but it couldn't come at the hands of a better team.
Minot State toppled old rival Dickinson State 3-1 (25-18, 25-88, 23-25, 25-12) to get back to even on the season and the Beavers swept the seasons series with the Blue Hawks in NCAA Division II women's volleyball Saturday at the MSU Dome.
The Beavers (9-9 overall) did drop one set to the Blue Hawks but sandwiched two dominate performances around the one game. Minot State gave up a combined 20 points during the second and fourth sets.
Minot State fired a solid .305 hitting percentage, highlighted by an outstanding 13 kills on 22 attacks in set 2. The Beavers only had one game under .200 – the one they lost, hitting .179.
Leading the way on the offensive side was
Jen Dixon (So., OH, Brandon, Manitoba). Dixon was outstanding much of the night, finishing with just five hitting errors, while taking 43 swings. She paced all players with 25 kills and added a team-high five aces.
But it wasn't just Dixon. Senior
Janice Rose Reinbolt (MH, Maple Creek, Saskatchewan) pounded out 16 kills, while junior
Kelsey Wingo (MH, Twain Harte, Calif.) added 10.
Dickinson State (0-21) tried to battle back, getting the close win in set 3, but was overmatched at the net most of the night. The Blue Hawks were led offensively by Sarah Zeibig who had 10 kills, but hit just .182 in the match. Brianny Williams added eight kills. Kelsey Chan finished with 26 assists and Katelyn Christensen finished with 13 digs to pace DSU in each category.
MSU's
Emily Byrne (Fr., S, Reno, Nev.) continued solid play as she recorded 51 assists and added 17 digs in the match. MSU had four players in double figures in digs as Reinbolt,
Jenna Moffatt (So., L, Brandon, Manitoba) and Dixon had 12, 11 and 10 digs respectively.
The Beavers will look to go above .500 for the first time this season since the early stages with a road match against University of Minnesota Crookston Tuesday.
