Fourth straight win gets MSU over .500

Beavers have chance for first winning season in nine years

MAYVILLE, N.D. – After a four-match losing streak, getting over .500 has been one of the Minot State University volleyball top goals.

The goal might have seemed lofty at one point when the Beavers were 2-6 and facing a challenge that has eluded MSU since 2002.

But MSU clawed all the way back and with a 3-0 (27-25, 35-19, 25-15) win over Mayville State, the Beavers pushed over .500 for the first time since going 19-9 in 2002.

“There is a whole lot of good about that,” said MSU head coach Travis Ward when asked about .500. “It think we would have been very frustrated if we didn't get to this point. It became a goal, but it is almost a scary goal because it has been so long. This is a huge accomplishment for our program.”

Ward was just as quick to point out the Beavers have matches to play however. MSU can earn its first winning season in regular season play with a win over Black Hills State in the season finale on Saturday (7 p.m.) at the Dome.

“It would be fantastic to get that winning season with a win at home. You have to compliment the girls for what they have done,” he said. “We had two four-match losing streaks, that's eight right there. We feel if we could have got a couple that we thought we should win, it could have been that much better. But we have to play well over the next couple to guarantee that winning season.”

The Beavers (15-14 overall) have won four straight matches and six of their last seven. MSU takes on BHSU at the Dome on Saturday before heading to the Transitional Tournament in Lindenwood, Mo., Nov. 10-12 to end the season.
