TUCSON, Ariz. – Minot State University's pitching duo of
Jen Dixon (Fr., Brandon, Manitoba) and
Mandy Greenberg (So., Winnipeg, Manitoba) were lights out Friday.
Dixon twirled a three-hitter for her first collegiate shutout and Greenberg tossed a two-hitter while striking out eight for the Beavers.
Minot State topped Azusa Pacific (Calif.) 5-1 in game 1 and earned a 1-0 win over Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in game 2 to run its record to 4-0 over the first two days of the Tucson Invitational.
Greenberg settled down after a slow start during a trip to Las Vegas, Nev., for the Beavers opening tournament of the season. She has allowed just two runs over her last 14 innings in Tucson and has stuck out 23 batters in those two games.
Dixon did not allow an extra base hit during her game, striking out one and walking one. She is 2-0 in a start and a relief appearance during the Invite.
MSU fell behind 1-0 after two innings against Azusa, but battled back to get a run in the third and then five runs in the sixth to blow open the game.
Kyla Thiesen (Jr., 2B, Brandon, Manitoba) had the hot hand at the plate as she went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in.
Colleen Bertrand (Fr., C, Langley, British Columbia) was 2-for-3,
Ashley Smoke (Jr., C, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba) added a double and
Deanna Mitchell (Jr., OF, Portage, Manitoba) and
Brittany Bartel (So., 3B, Sinclair, Manitoba) both had RBIs.
The Beavers outhit Azusa 11-2 in the win.
The second game was a classic pitcher's duel as both teams finished with three hits. MSU got its only run in the sixth inning as
Katie Backes (Fr., P/Util., Minot, N.D.) doubled and came home on a
Leah Matthewson (So., 1B/OF, Regina, Saskatchewan) RBI groundout. Backes finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of doubles and Dixon collected the Beavers only other hit.
Minot State plays two more Saturday before having a light day on Sunday with just one game. The Beavers take on Iowa Wesleyan at 6 p.m. and Siena Heights at 8 p.m. Saturday and faces Midland Lutheran Sunday at 10 a.m.
