OVERALL SERIES: This is the first meeting between the two schools in football.
NOTING THE PEACOCKS: Upper Iowa University limited Minnesota State Moorhead to just 74 yards in total offense for its first win of the season last week… Through three games, the Peacocks have picked up 1,302 yards in total offense, averaging 6.2 yards per play and 434 yards of total offense per game… Head coach Tom Shea is no stranger to Minot State, having coached against the Beavers as the head coach of both the University of Mary in the DAC-10 and Dakota State in the Dakota Athletic Conference… Quarterback Cole Jaeschke has thrown for 809 yards and nine touchdowns so far this season with just three interceptions. Against Moorhead, Jaeschke threw three first quarter strikes, hitting Keaton Hosch twice and Lucas Hefty once for TD passes. UIU has only returned two punts this year for a total of four yards… Upper Iowa is honoring Dick Timmerman, the team's equipment manager, for his 50 years of service to collegiate football at UIU, Northern Iowa and the University of Iowa.
I'VE BEEN EVERYWHERE, MAN: Minot State's recent travels have been documented as the Beavers played in five different states last season. This year, MISU has added Nebraska (two weeks ago at Wayne State College) and this week in Iowa. Minot State has only played two other Iowa teams in its 87 seasons playing football, holding a 1-1 record against Teikyo Westmar and a 1-2 record against Northwestern Iowa.
THE OLD STOMPING GROUNDS: The Beavers head coach Paul Rudolph spent nine seasons with Upper Iowa, serving as head coach all nine seasons and as Athletic Director from 1996-99. Rudolph was 43-47 overall and helped UIU post is first winning record in football in 26 seasons in 1992 as Rudolph's team went 6-4. He was named the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1992. His teams broke 22 school records for offense during his time with the Peacocks.
STILL NO SACK LUNCH: Over three games in 2012, Minot State has still not recorded a sack of the opposing team's quarterback. The Beavers finished with just 12 in 2011. Minot State had 29.5 in 2010 and averaged 24.0 sacks over head coach Paul Rudolph's first four seasons with the Beavers.
EGGL OVER THE DEFENSE EASY: Minot State senior running back
Blake Eggl (Minot, N.D.) recorded his first touchdown pass of his career as he lofted a perfect pass over the University of Sioux Falls defense in the first quarter, connecting with
Wayne Peters (Jr., WR, Carson, Calif.) on a fake sweep. Eggl has a 959.20 passer efficiency rating after completing just the one pass.
DYNAMIC DUO: The Beavers recorded their first 100-plus receiving game as
Wayne Peters caught six passes for 107 yards against Sioux Falls. MISU had not had a 100 yard receiver since the final game in 2011 as
Jabari Taylor hauled in seven passes for 128 yards. The Beavers almost had two players top the 100-yard plateau as
Glyn Borel (Jr., WR, San Jose, Calif.) had six catches for 99 yards. Both Borel and Peters caught TD passes.
NEW KID ON THE BLOCK: MISU junior
Jeff Buchert (DB, Plainfield, Conn.) had his best day as a Beaver last Saturday, recording eight total tackles , 1.5 tackles for a loss and a pass break up. On the season, Buchert, who is the first player from Connecticut to grace the Beavers roster in recent memory, has 17 total tackles good for fourth overall on the Beavers roster.
FIRST FOR STURM: Minot State redshirt freshman
Porter Sturm (WR, Roy, Mont.) had his best day in a Beavers uniform, catching four passes for 48 yards and his first collegiate touchdown. Sturm was shut out in the season opener against Minnesota State and had just one catch against Wayne State College in the second game, but broke out for the four catches against USF. He is the team's fourth leading receiver with 64 yards on the season.
NO AIR, NO AIR: Minot State's offense hasn't generated much passing offense through three games, averaging 111 yards passing total. But the Beavers defense has been solid in stopping the pass, giving up just 156 yards passing total. In all, team's are completing just 46.8 percent of their passes against the Beavers defense and completed 14.6 passes per game.
