Minot State gets back on track

The Beavers beat Valley City State in straight sets

Box Score  MINOT, N.D. – The streak is over.

Minot State University hit .279 for the match and had just eight hitting errors through two sets to sweep Valley City State 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-17) in nonconference NCAA Division II volleyball Tuesday at the MSU Dome.

The win ended an eight-game losing streak for MISU.

The Beavers (4-11 overall) hit .333 and .316 respectively over the first two sets, smacking a combined 30 kills over the two games. Valley City State (5-16) was just the opposite as the Vikings hit .000 (5 kills, 5 errors) in set 1 and minus-.62 (6 kills, 8 errors) in set 3.

“We played more physical tonight and that helped us,” said head coach Travis Ward. “Our passing was much better tonight; all the girls did a really good job passing it. When we can get Emily Byrne (So., S. Reno, Nev.) good passes like we did tonight, she can be lethal out there.”

After the intermission the Beavers used a quick start, jumping ahead of the Vikings 8-1 to start the third set, to put the finishing touches on the win.

MISU was led by freshman Mallory Sall (OH, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) in kills (12) and digs (14). Shari Hewson (Sr., MH, New England, N.D.) added 10 kills and freshman Tarah Dabovich (MH, Phoenix, Ariz.) finished with nine kills, an ace, a solo block and a block assist.

VCSU was paced by Aurisa Martens's seven kills, while Stephanie Miller and Anna Neufield had nine assists each.

The Beavers will head back into Northern Sun with some confidence. Minot State travels to Wayne State College for a match on Friday night (7 p.m.) and to Augustana College for a Saturday afternoon (4 p.m.) match.

“Moving back into the NSIC we need to continue improving every day,” said Ward. “If we can pass well can give ourselves a chance in every match, if not we can get rolled over every match. Our team is looking forward to the challenge of getting that first conference win.”
