Beavers fall in straight sets at #20 Wayne State

MISU has lost six straight matches to open conference play

Box Score WAYNE, Neb.- A new opponent, but the same result.

The Minot State University volleyball team was defeated by #20 Wayne State College in straight sets (25-21, 25-15, 25-19) Friday night in Rice Auditorium.

It marked the first time the two teams had ever faced off on the volleyball court.

The Wildcat attack was led by outside hitter Cori Hobbs with 12 kills and eight digs throughout the match while setter Leisa McClintock had 29 assists and five kills.

"They (Wayne State) played very well as a team," said head coach Travis Ward. "I was happy with the effort our team gave but we just don't have all the pieces to the puzzle on the court. Give Wayne credit, they are a top 25 team for a reason and they showed us why tonight."

MISU was led by freshman Mallory Sall (OH, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) with a double-double, 13 kills and 11 digs. Shari Hewson (Sr., MH, New England, N.D.) also had a solid performance collecting 10 kills and nine digs for the Beavers.

In sets one and three, the Beavers kept things close until the end as untimely errors brought the team to defeat.

"We have a young team with a few key players missing and I am very proud of the team we have out there," said Ward. "But there are only so many 'moral victories' we can have. Our girs give a winning effort and deserve to win, we just need to cut down on the errors and play more efficiently on offense."

Minot State will head north to Sioux Falls, S.D. to take on the Vikings of Augustana College on Saturday afternoon (4 p.m.).
