Box Score MINOT, N.D. – Entering Friday night's match against Augustana College, the Minot State volleyball team had never defeated an opponent receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Poll.
The Beavers had their best chance yet against the Vikings, but could not close the end of sets two and three. MISU fell to Augustana College in straight sets 25-19, 27-25, 26-24 for their fourth straight loss.
"We talk about how consistency wins in this league," said Minot State head coach
Travis Ward. "I'm not taking away anything against Augustana, they played great at the end of those sets in spots where they could have folded. We have to learn to play consistent. I am really proud of the way we played but we just need to learn from it and move beyond it so we can play consistent."
After dropping set one, MISU found themselves down 15-10 in the second. But the Beavers re-grouped and battled back going on a 14-6 run to earn a set point. MISU had three chances to win the set but hitting and errors cost them the chance to even things up heading to intermission.
In the third set, Minot State jumped out to a 13-6 lead, but again could not hang on to the lead as errors hurt the Beavers late in their sets. On the night, MISU committed 28 hitting errors, the fourth most they have had as a team during the 2013 season.
The Vikings were led by Courtney Ysker with 14 kills on the night while reigning AVCA National Player of the Week Holly Hafemeyer also notched 12 kills and a .545 hitting percentage.
Minot State was led by
Lauren Dunkle (Fr., OH, Aurora, Colo.) with 13 kills and nine digs.
Jen Dixon (Jr., OH, Brandon, Manitoba) collected her 66th career double digit kill match with 10 kills while also leading the team with 14 digs.
Ward was also impressed with his defensive unit of Alex Boutin (Fr., L, Parker, Colo.),
Whitney Hightower (Jr., L, Jefferson, Ore.) and
Ashley Heavenor (So., L, Cochrane, Alberta). The trio combined for 19 digs in the loss.
"A lot of credit goes to that group," said Ward. "They have really locked down their positions and have made our team better. Whit did a great job of coming in tonight and giving us a nice round of serves. The depth at the position is really important to us and I am just really proud of the way we played. We just need to get it done when it matters."
The Beavers will close out their 2013 season Saturday night when they host No. 20 Wayne State College at 6 p.m. in the Dome.
