Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – Minot State University pitching overwhelmed Spring Arbor University (Mich.) as the Beavers started their spring break trip with a pair of wins.
Starting pitcher
Mandy Greenberg (Sr.,Winnipeg, Manitoba) fanned 12 of the 16 batters she faced in game 1 and starter
Tiffany Friesen (Sr., Morden, Manitoba) shut out SAU over eight innings pitched in the two games.
The Beavers posted two shutouts, winning 4-0 in game 1 and 8-0 (6 innings) in game 2 to run its record to 10-1 overall and 2-0 at the National Training Center Spring Tournament in NCAA Division II softball Monday.
Greenberg struck out the side twice and Kd at least two batters in every inning for her fifth win of the season. She gave way to Friesen in the sixth and the senior promptly stuck out the side to give MISU pitchers 15 strikeouts on the day. Greenberg has yet to give up a run in 2013, throwing 27 innings of shutout ball.
“Mandy really set the tone early for us,” said MISU head coach
Bill Triplett. “She was nearly untouchable and got us going in the right direction down here. It was a long trip over a couple of days, so it was nice to have Mandy get out there and shut them down from the start.”
The Beavers (10-1 overall, 0-0 NSIC) took a little time to get going, but scored one in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Jen Dixon (Jr., OF/P, Brandon, Manitoba) had a hand in three of the runs as she tripled in the fourth and scored on a
Stacy Fournier (Jr., 3B, Langley, British Columbia) run scoring grounder. Dixon then tripled home
Taylor Studler (So., 1B, Grosse Isle, Manitoba) and
Ali Cygan (So., SS, Bozeman, Mont.) in the top of the fifth after Cygan singled home
Katie Backes (Jr., UTL, Minot, N.D.) to give MISU a 4-0 cushion.
“Dixon continues to crush the ball,” Triplett said. “She hit some ropes today.”
In game 2, Friesen did most of the work herself, pitching a complete game for her fourth win of the season and finishing 3-for-3 at the plate with five runs batted in. She plated two with a double in her first at bat, singled home Fournier in the third and hit her team-leading fourth home run in the fifth.
“I think that's Tiff's fourth home run in her last five games,” Triplett said. “She is a threat to go deep in every at bat and we need her to continue to hit in the middle of our order. We can be awfully tough when she is hitting like today.”
Dixon was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored in game 2, while Backes added a single to give her three hits on the day.
The Beavers continue play Tuesday as they take on the University of Bridgeport at 11 a.m. (EDT) and Saint Leo University at 5 p.m. (EDT).
