Mavericks rally past Beavers with walk off

Minot State loses first game at NSIC tournament

Box Score ROCHESTER, Minn. – Minot State couldn't get the final two outs to finish off what could have been its biggest win of the season.

The Beavers carried a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning against No. 23 ranked and top seed Minnesota State.

But an error and a walk off home run sunk the Beavers in the winner's bracket game, as MSU's Jenna Peterson hit a two-run home run as the Mavericks defeated Minot State 2-1 at the 2013 U.S. Bank / NSIC Softball Tournament played at the Rochester Community and Technical College Dome Saturday.

The Beavers (27-8) move into a loser out game with Winona State immediately following the loss, while Minnesota State (36-10) moves on to face Minnesota Duluth in the winner's bracket semifinal.

Minot State's Mandy Greenberg (Sr., P, Winnipeg, Manitoba) was again superb, twirling a two-hitter to suffer just her fourth loss of the season. She struck out nine batters in the game to push her tournament total to 26 and gave up just one earned run.

Carmen Vargas (Sr., C, Cathedral City, Calif.) gave Minot State the 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly, scoring Keysha Jansen (Jr., P, Melville, Saskatchewan), who pinch ran for Stacy Fournier (Jr., INF, Langley, British Columbia). Fournier walked and moved up when Katie Backes (Jr., UTL, Minot, N.D.) was hit by a pitch and Brittany Thorson (Fr., SS/P, El Paso, Texas) bunted her over.

The Beavers earned the 1-0 lead without a hit and went until the fifth without one. Ali Cygan (So., SS, Bozeman, Mont.) broke up the no hitter with a single, MISU's only hit.

The Mavericks got the game winner after Kelly Wood reached on an error with one out. Peterson then plated them both with a home run off the roof at the RCTC Dome that just cleared the right center fence.

While she didn't get a hit, MISU's Jen Dixon (Jr., OF/P, Brandon, Manitoba) continued to get on base as she drew three walks in the game and has safely six straight at bats in the tournament.
