GREAT FALLS, Mont.– The Minot State University volleyball picked up their first win of the 2013 season Saturday afternoon.

The Beavers went 1-3 on the opening weekend as the lost in four sets to Montana State Northern 25-22, 19-25, 21-25, 20-25 but then redeemed themselves against the University of Great Falls Argos in clean sweep 25-16, 25-22, 25-11.

Mallory Sall (So. OH, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) led the way for MISU with 11 kills while fellow sophomore Tarah Dabovich (MH, Phoenix, Ariz.) chipped in with seven kills on an efficient 13 attacks. Setter Emily Byrne (Jr., Reno, Nev.) did a nice job spreading the ball around, collecting 27 assists in the win.

"Mallory, and really the whole team did a nice job rebounding from a rough day yesterday," said MISU head coach Travis Ward. "We did a better job managing the game and making the right choices. When we do that, it pays off and we are a much better team."

The Beaver defense did a nice job shutting down UGF's hitters as they held their opponent to just a .090 hitting percentage.

"We did a nice job from the service line and that really put them out of their game," said Ward. "We were able to move them around a bit and we capitalized on their mistakes."

In Saturday's earlier match, the Beavers won in the first set but could not tame the hitting of the MSU-Northern Skylights as they hit .325 against MISU. Skylight hitter Kelsey Williams led MSU-N with 14 kills.

In the loss, three Beavers hit the double-digit kill mark as Sall, again, led Minot State with 14 kills while Jen Dixon (Jr., OH, Brandon, Manitoba) notched 10 kills while freshman Lauren Dunkle (OH, Aurora, Colo.) played her best collegiate match with 12 kills on a .391 hitting percentage.

"Lauren is one of those kids we are excited to have in our program," said Ward. "As a freshman, preparing to play in the NSIC you are going to need some confidence and I think she did that today.

"We are going to be a lot of fun to watch moving forward. We are getting better all the time and I can't wait to get on the floor for our next match."

The Beavers (1-3 overall) will now prepare for a non-confernece matchup at Mayville State on Wednesday Sept. 11. They will then head to Sioux Falls, S.D. for the 2013 NSIC Challenge.
