Beavers fall in close battle with Mavericks

Sall records 16 kills and Pelo digs 18 attacks in Beaver defeat

MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State University volleyball team dropped their second straight match this weekend after coming into the weekend with a four-game winning streak. The Beavers fell to Minnesota State-Mankato by a score of 3-0.

The match this afternoon proved to be much closer than what the score suggests as the Beavers didn't lose a single set by more than four points.

In the first set, Minot State got off to a strong start and held an early 10-5 lead. A span of seven straight points by the Mavericks, though, made the score 12-10 in their favor. The teams continued to trade points the rest of the way but ultimately the Mavericks took the set, 25-21.

The second set continued the back-and-forth trend throughout the set's entirety. The Beavers were unable to capitalize on their lone set point at 26-25 and the Mavericks eventually took the set 29-27.

Minnesota State distanced themselves just enough with a 15-10 score in the third set to go on and finish off the match. After a few runs by each team, Mankato took the set, 25-21, and the game, 3-0.

Mallory Sall (Jr., OH, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) recorded an impressive 16 kills in the match for the Beavers, good for an overall game-high. She did so with an efficient .314 hitting percentage. Jen Dixon (Sr., OH, Brandon, Manitoba) was the only other Beaver to record double-digit kills in the match (10).

Cindy Pelo (Jr., L, Idaho Falls, Idaho) ended the match with 18 digs to lead the way defensively for Minot State.

The Beavers head home this week with a 9-18 overall record and a 6-12 conference record.

This Friday Minot State will play Upper Iowa in the Minot State Dome at 7 p.m. The following night, the Beavers will honor their seniors when they play Winona State at 6 p.m.
