MOORHEAD, Minn. – Minot State University couldn't overcome turnovers and Minnesota State University Moorhead free throws losing 64-60 at MSU-M in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Friday at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
"We played hard tonight and did some good things at times. We just had moments were we lacked concentration," said MSU head coach
Sheila Green Gerding. "In this league, you can afford to do that. Give credit to (MSU Moorhead), they made a few more plays down the stretch than we did."
It was the second-straight last possession loss for the Beavers as they fell by a point last week at the University of Mary. This time, down by two with less than 10 seconds to play, MSU had two changes for the tie but didn't get a bucket to drop and were called on a key traveling call.
The travel after a big offensive rebound with just two seconds remaining ended up being the Beavers 21st turnover in the game.
Minot State (5-2 overall, 0-2 NSIC) built a 13-point lead early in the game as they limited the Dragons to just one field goal in the first six minutes of the game. In fact, MSU-M (2-4, 1-1) hit just six first-half field goals, but trailed by just five 32-27 after outscoring MSU 14-1 from the line.
The free-throw line discrepancy ended at a 31-8 advantage for the MSU Moorhead as the Dragons knocked down 86.1 percent, going 31 for 36 from the line. Minot State struggled to just 44.4 percent on 8-of-18 shooting.
The Dragons had three players in double figures and all three were spectacular from the line as Heather Strese led all scorers with 17 points, going 8 for 8 from the line. Natalie Van Wyhe was 10 for 11 from the line for 14 points and Meghan Roehrich was 7 for 8 from the line for 13 points.
Morgan Klose (Sr., G, Fairview, N.D.) and
Amanda Sansaver (Jr., G, Wolf Point, Mont.) paced the Beavers with 12 points apiece.
Savana Kingsbury (Jr., F, Omaha, Neb.) added 10 points and six rebounds.
Diondra Denton (So., G, Great Falls, Mont.) led the team with seven rebounds to go along with seven points.
The Beavers will look to snap a two-game losing streak in a tough place to do so as MSU travels to No. 5 ranked Northern State for a 5 p.m. tipoff Saturday.
