Box Score CLERMONT, Fla. – Minot State University fell behind 3-0 after one inning, but stormed back behind a hot-hitting group to rally for a 10-3 win over New York Institute of Technology Tuesday in NCAA Division II softball at the National Training Center Tournament at the NTC Softball Complex.
"You never want to get behind early like we did, but it was good to see how we handled it," said MISU head coach
Bill Triplett. "We battled right back. Our offense did a great job."
The Beavers (11-5 overall) won its seven straight game in Florida and their eighth-straight overall on the season. The Beavers were supposed to play Kutztown on Tuesday as well, but rain overnight changed the overall schedule and that game was cancelled.
Minot State found itself down early as NYIT strung together four singles and a key Minot State error to take the 3-0 lead. It remained 3-0 until the third before the Beavers' bat came alive.
Ali Cygan (Jr., SS, Bozeman, Mont.) and
Stacy Fournier (Sr., 3B, Langley, British Columbia) drove in two apiece in the inning to help the Beavers take a 5-3 lead.
MISU blew things open in the sixth with four more as four different Beavers drove in runs.
"With one day left down here, we are set up pretty good," Triplett said. "Our offense is on a roll and Jen (
Jen Dixon, Sr., LF/P, Brandon, Manitoba) and Mindy (
Mindy Lorimor, Jr., P, Thurman, Iowa) had yesterday off and saw limited action today."
After the first-inning rally for NYIT, the Beavers pitching tandem of Dixon and Lorimor allowed just two more hits the rest of the game. Lorimor earned the win in relief, going four innings of just two-hit ball, striking out seven. Dixon started and was solid, giving up just two earned runs over three innings and three strikeouts. Triplett indicated he would have stayed with Dixon longer if the Beavers would have played two games Tuesday.
"We knew we weren't going to get to play to games today due to the rain, so we split things up pitching," he said. "They were both really good again."
The Beavers finish their 2014 NTC Tournament with a pair of games Tuesday, taking on Saint Michael's College for the second time in the tournament and the University of New Haven.
