MINOT, N.D. – On senior night at Minot State University, a junior stole the show.
Savanna Kingsbury (F, Omaha, Neb.) continued her progression throughout the second half of the season, netting a career-high 16 points and finished with 11 rebounds as the Beavers pulled away in the second half, winning 77-50 over Bemidji State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball Saturday at the Minot State Dome.
Kingsbury was nearly unstoppable early in the second half during a key stretch where MSU turned a five-point halftime lead into a blowout. She hit 7 of 8 free throws and pulled down five offensive boards to notch her second career double-double.
"It was the last one for the seniors and the last home game so really we just came out and knew that we had to end well for them," Kingsbury said. "My goal is to focus more on the boards than I do offensively. I try to get people open. I just crash."
Minot State (11-15 overall, 6-14 NSIC) didn't heat up on offense until midway through the second half. The Beavers shot just 36.6 percent in the first half. But they hit 54 percent in the second half. And, they never let BSU get going on their end of the court. MSU held BSU to 32 percent shooting for the game and just seven field goals in the second half.
"It's nice to finally finish our home weekend and get a sweep at home," said MSU head coach
Sheila Green Gerding. "We'll come off the two wins feeling pretty good because we were on a four game skid there for a while so it's nice to stop the win and play some good basketball."
MSU was led on offense by another underclassman as
Diondra Denton (So., G, Great Falls, Mont.) hit for 19 points and added seven rebounds. She played her best weekend in a month as she has battled injuries.
"We kind of just go along in the game and think things are going to take care themselves when we really could actually have a little more effect on that if we play a little grittier and fight a little harder for all those 50/50 balls," Green Gerding said. "I thought Diondra and Savana fought for a lot of them."
MSU's senior trio of
Katie Hardy (F, Fairview, N.D.),
Morgan Klose (G, Fairview, N.D.) and
Christina Boag (F, Tamworth, Australia) finished their final home game in style as they combined for 26 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists to help Minot State to its first NSIC weekend sweep on the season.
The Beavers seniors combined for more than 300 games, nearly 3,000 points and over 1,000 rebounds in their careers.
Bemidji State (6-19, 3-17) had two in double figures as Tatum Sheley led the way with 14 points off the bench. Aimee Pelzer finished with 11 points and five rebounds in the loss.
Hardy and Klose netted nine each for MSU, while
Alex Haley (So., G, Libertyville, Ill.) and Boag finished with eight each.
MSU finishes the 2014-15 NSIC regular season with road games at St. Cloud State Friday and Minnesota Duluth Saturday.
