Golden Bears drop Beavers in extras

Schulz's two-run home run in the 9th spoiled by Concordia

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Minot State baseball team came up on the wrong end of things in a back-and-forth affair with Concordia St. Paul in the first of two games Wednesday afternoon in Tucson, Ariz. The Beavers fell 9-8 in extra innings.

Despite leading at three different points throughout the game, Minot State wasn't able to maintain a lead throughout. Its first lead came after Paul Vogelsang (So., C, Regina, Saskatchewn) homered in the second inning followed by a couple of runs scored in the fourth, giving the Beavers a 3-1 lead.

After Concordia recorded four runs of its own in the bottom half of the fourth, the Beavers regained the lead in the fifth much in part due to back-to-back doubles from Jordan Schulz (So, OF, Strasbourg, Saskatchewan) and Jared Young (Fr., UTL/P, Prince George, British Columbia).

With Concordia scoring a run in the eighth inning taking an 8-7 lead into the ninth, the Beavers were down to their final three outs in the game, but Schulz hit a two-run home run putting the Beavers ahead one heading into the bottom of the ninth.

The Golden Bears didn't go easily, though, as they tied the game up on an RBI single in the bottom half of the ninth. Alec Grothe (Jr., P, Bismarck, N.D.) picked up the final out of the inning as he touched first on a comebacker.

Minot State was unable to score a run in the top of the 10th and ultimately Concordia ended the game in the bottom of the 10th on a walk-off double.

"We fought," Minot State head coach Brock Weppler said. "We hit the ball hard today and had good approaches again at the plate. Obviously defense is a theme again. We've got to clean it up. If we want to win games like that we're not going to win them without defense. That's what it comes down to."

Defensively, the Beavers ended with four errors in the game.

Schulz led the way offensively going 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs. Nicholas Hammerl (Sr., INF, West Peoria, Ill.), Young and Keith Ailes (Jr., OF/1B, Bozeman, Mont.) all recorded two hits for Minot State.
Grothe was charged with the loss as Minot State moves to 2-4 on the season and 2-1 in Tucson.

The Beavers will look to regroup quickly as they're slated to face Southwest Minnesota State at 6 p.m. later today. Minot State defeated the Mustangs 10-3 two days ago.
