Northern State stymies MSU

Minot State can't hold late lead in game 2, falls twice at NSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ABERDEEN, S.D. – Minot State University couldn't sustain its offense, scoring runs in just two of the 14 innings played as the Beavers fell twice to Northern State in an Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference softball double header at Moccasin Creek.

The Beavers (24-12 overall, 5-8 NSIC) finished with just five hits and scored a single run in the third inning in a 3-1 loss in game 1 and plated three in the first inning, but were shut out the rest of the way in a 4-3 loss in game 2.

In game 1, neither team mustered much offense as starting pitchers Mindy Lorimor (Sr., Thurman, Iowa) for MSU and Sami Smesmo for Northern State only allowed runs in a total of three innings. NSU took a 1-0 lead with a run in the second, before the Beavers scored an unearned run to tie the game.

The Wolves (20-15, 7-5) got the eventual game-winner off the bat of Macey Engel, who homered in the fourth as a part of a 3-for-3 day. The two run shot was enough as the Beavers finished with just two hits after scoring the run in the third.

Lorimor (15-9) didn't allow much either, finishing with a complete game, nine-hitter. She struck out three and walked just one batter in the loss. Smesmo, however, scattered five hits and struck out two to improve to 13-7.

Melissa Bell (Sr., UTL, Belgrade, Mont.) went 2 for 4 as the only MSU player who multiple hits.

In game 2, MSU's Alyssa Cornejo (So., P/UTL, Riverside, Calif.) cruised through three innings as she faced just 10 batters in the first three innings with the 3-0 lead. But, NSU scored two in the fourth and added another in the fifth to tie the game at 3.

The Wolves put it away in the bottom of the seventh as Eryn Yancy singled home pinch runner Ashley Clapp for the walk off win.

MSU opened the 3-0 lead after one inning as Rachel Burdette (So., UTL, Temecula, Calif.), Ashley Hill (Fr., 1B, Mesa, Ariz.) and Cornejo, who doubled, all drove in runs.

But, like in game 1, NSU starter Missy Elkins settled down. She allowed just two hits and no runs after the first inning.

Yancy went 3 for 4 with two RBIs in the win for NSU.

Six different players had one hit for the Beavers. Jordan (So., CF, Adelnato, Calif.) and Leyna Downey (Sr., OF, Missoula, Mont.) and Ali Cygan (Sr., SS, Bozeman, Mont.) joined the run scoring hits from the first inning with singles.

The Beavers continue on the road this weekend, traveling to Upper Iowa Saturday and Winona State Sunday for a pair of NSIC double headers.
