Bulldogs top Beavers on day one

Beavers combine for just five runs

MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State University baseball team had a difficult time keeping the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs off the base path Friday afternoon as UMD walked away from day one of the four-game series with two victories.

"We've got to pitch better on the mound," MSU head coach Brock Weppler said. "We had a lot of guys leaving the ball up and getting down in the count."

The Bulldogs took game one, 10-3, and game two, 12-2.

Minot State quickly fell behind in game one as the Bulldogs scored two runs in both the first and second inning. Micah Holmen (Jr., 1B/3B, Minot, N.D.) got the Beavers on the board in the bottom of the third with a solo shot to left center cutting the Bulldogs' lead to 4-1.

Two more big innings from the Bulldogs in the fourth and sixth innings, where they pushed three runners across the plate in each inning, put the game out of reach.

Paul Vogelsang (So., C, Regina, Saskatchewan) gave the Beavers their final two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run to left field. It was Vogelsang's sixth home run of the season.

Game two was more of the same for Minot State as they conceded nine runs before scoring on an RBI double from Brad Rolff (Sr., SS/3B, North Folk, Calif.) in the bottom of the fifth.

Minot State, whose offense has stagnated as of late, combined for six hits in game two and seven hits in game one.

Three of Minot State's seven hits in game one came from Nicholas Hammerl (Sr., SS/2B, West Peoria, Ill.) who ended game one going 3-for-4. Trevor Gust (Sr., C/DH, Minot, N.D.) was the only other Beaver to record a multi-hit game. Gust went 2-for-3 in game two with a run scored.

Minot State (11-32, 8-24) and Minnesota Duluth (30-14, 24-10) will play again tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon.

"I think the biggest thing tomorrow is we've got to have every guy out their busting his butt," Weppler said. "You saw it from several guys today—(Jordan) Schulz, Kyle (Williamson) and Brad (Rolff) laying out making players—but we've got to have that out of everyone. Everyone's got to leave it on the field."

The Beavers will honor their five seniors in between games tomorrow on the final day of the season.
