Box Score LAS VEGAS, Nev. – While it wasn't as big as Saturday's comeback, Minot State University had one more rally in them.
The Beavers (3-2 overall) outscored Nebraska-Kearney 8-1 over the final five innings to erase a 2-0 deficit to run their record to 3-2 at the 2016 Montana State-Billings Desert Stinger Sunday at Majestic Park.
"We need to shore up our defense, but other than that, it was a good game for us," said MSU head coach
Bill Triplett. "It was a total team effort again today."
UNK scored single runs in the first three innings, but MSU countered with two in the top of the third on a two-run home run by
Isis Cabral (Fr., OF, Oxnard, Calif.) to make it a 3-2 game. It stayed that way until the fifth when the Beavers manufactured a run to tie it at 3 as
Jordan Grant (Jr., CF, Adelanto, Calif.), stole second, moved up on a throwing error and then scored on a single by
Lauren Cowden (Fr., UTL, Moorpark, Calif.).
"Having Cabral go deep for us was a good sign," Triplett said. "She's been working hard at getting better."
The Beavers broke it open in the sixth and seven, scoring five between the two innings.
Ashley Hill (So., 1B, Mesa, Ariz.) opened the inning with a double and
Jenn Spencer (Jr., P/1B, Winnipeg, Manitoba) scored after pinch running for Hill on
Alyssa Cornejo's (Jr., P/UTL, Riverside, Calif.) single for the eventual game winner. MSU tacked on a run with two illegal pitches later in the inning.
Hill drove in another run and Cornejo two on a double for the Beavers three runs in the seventh.
The scoring helped Cornejo earn the win in relief of starter Clarissa Ramierz (Jr., P/UTL, Tucson, Ariz.). Ramirez worked 2 1/3 innings, giving up three runs – two earned – with a strikeout. Cornejo was outstanding in relief as she scattered three hits over the final 4 2/3.
"We tried to shorten the game for P-Nut (Cornejo)," said Triplett. "We asked for two or three innings out of Reece and she gave us that. Our defense came back strong and then P-Nut shut them down."
Grant, Cowden, Hill, Cornejo and Ramirez all finished with two hits as MSU finished with 12 as a team.
MSU is off until Feb. 27 and 28 when they take on NSIC teams in nonconference games in St. Cloud, Minn., at the Husky Dome.
