MINOT, N.D. -- The Minot State football team will seek its second road victory of the season when it visits Minnesota Duluth for a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contest slated for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Saturday (Oct. 21) at Malosky Stadium.
The Beavers victory this season came in week five when Minot State defeated Mary 27-19 in Bismarck. The Beavers also played well in a road loss at Southwest Minnesota State where Minot State had a pass intercepted at the goal line on the final play of the game.
Minot State, which is 1-6 overall and 1-2 in the NSIC North, capped a two-game homestand with a 40-14 loss to Bemidji State last Saturday at Herb Parker Stadium.
Minnesota Duluth, which is 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the NSICÂ North, is riding a four-game winning streak and shares the top spot in the North Division with a perfect 3-0 record. The Bulldogs have beaten St. Cloud State, Minnesota State Moorhead and Northern State in North Division play.
The Beavers fell behind Bemidji State 19-0 after the opening quarter last week, but rallied back into the game.
Larry Overstreet strutted into the end zone from a yard out to get the Beavers on the scoreboard and he later connected with
Kristopher Bueno on a 30-yard scoring pass to bring Minot State to within 26-14 at the half.
Bemidji State opened the second half with a long scoring drive and put the game away with another touchdown midway through the third quarter.
Overstreet, who is currently ranked sixth in the conference averaging 74.6 yards rushing per contest, had a solid all-around game against Bemidji State. He ran for 72 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, caught five passes for 39 yards and threw a 30-yard touchdown strike. In all, the senior accumulated 111 yards of total offense and accounted for both Minot State touchdowns.
Zac Cunha handled the bulk of the quarterbacking duties for the Beavers and finished the game 17-of-29 for 124 yards.
Andy Jones was 5-of-8 for 62 yards and he also added 22 yards rushing on the day.
Bueno had his best statistical game as a Beaver as he hauled in four passes for 77 yards including the 30-yard scoring strike from Overstreet.
Donnell Vercher,
Bryce Broome and
Matt Marler each tallied 11 tackles to lead the Minot State defense against Bemidji State. Vercher currently ranks second in the NSIC averaging 10.7 tackles per game, while Broome is fifth in the league averaging 10.3 tackles per game.
Justin Gonzales leads Minot State with three interceptions on the year, while Broome and
Kiante Goudeau each have two interceptions.
Minnesota Duluth ranks third in the conference in total defense allowing just 298.4 yards of offense per game and limited Northern State to 83 yards in a 41-0 victory last week.
