Beavers Suffer First Setback of Season

MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State women's basketball team dropped their first game of the season, as the Beavers fell 80-77 to Jamestown in a non-conference matchup in the Minot State Dome on Monday night.

The loss drops the Beavers to 2-1 (0-0 NSIC) on the season while the Jimmies improve to 6-2 (0-0 NSAA).

Five different players scored in double figures for the Beavers, led by Holly Johnson and Mariah Payne with 17 points each. Johnson also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists while Payne recorded three assists and two rebounds.

Kristal Flowers and Madison Wald added 15 points apiece. Flowers recorded a double-double with 15 points and a team-high 14 rebounds while Wald added seven rebounds and one assist.

Kari Clements poured in 12 points along with four assists, two blocks and one steal.

The first quarter was filled with runs from both teams, as Jamestown opened the game on a 14-5 run. Minot State climbed back with a 12-4 run of their own to cut the deficit to 18-17 before the Jimmies ended the quarter with a 6-0 run. The Jimmies shot 39% from the floor while the Beavers were held to 36% shooting.

Clements opened the second quarter with a three-pointer before the Jimmies rallied for a 7-0 run. Trailing 35-24, the Beavers fought back with an 11-4 run with all 11 points coming from Payne and Wald to trial 40-35 at the half. Wald led the Beavers with six points while Payne added five points.

The Jimmies shot 56% from the floor and outscored Minot State 25-14 in the third quarter to take a 65-49 lead going into the final quarter. Flowers paced the Beavers in the third quarter with seven points and four rebounds.

Facing a 73-60 deficit with six minutes left, Minot State was able to climb back to shoot a potential game-tying three pointer as time expired. The Beavers trimmed the lead to 73-70 with four minutes left off back-to-back two point baskets from Johnson.

After the Jimmies extended the lead to 77-70, the Beaver scored five unanswered points at the free throw line from Wald, Payne and Clements.

Jamestown added three points from the free throw line and Minot State scored a layup from Flowers to make it 80-77 before Flowers grabbed a rebound off the free throw with five seconds left and Johnson missed the potential game-tying three-pointer as time expired.

Jamestown shot 41% from the field while Minot State shot 39%, but the Beavers notched a 47-40 advantage in rebounds and 3-2 lead in blocks over the Jimmies.

Minot State returns to action on Wednesday night when they play Yellowstone Christian at 5:30 p.m. in the Minot State Dome.
