Johnson Propels Beavers Past Golden Eagles 77-67

MINOT, N.D. – Holly Johnson poured in a game-high 24 points and tied her season-high 12 rebounds to post her second double-double of the season in a 77-67 win at Minnesota Crookston on Saturday.

Minot State notched their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference weekend sweep on the road since January 10-11, 2014.

The Beavers improved their winning streak to three games and are now 9-9 (6-8 NSIC) on the season while the Golden Eagles fall to 5-13 (5-9 NSIC).

Minot State jumped out to a quick 13-5 lead after a 6-0 rally off back-to-back jumpers from Madison Wald and a layup from Kristal Flowers.

After leading 24-15 after the first quarter, the Beavers extended their lead to 35-21 off layups from Flowers and Johnson.

The Beavers led 42-32 at the half before Minnesota Crookston trimmed the Minot State lead down to 44-39 with 6:59 left in the third quarter. Diondra Denton cut any momentum the Golden Eagles had gained by knocking down three consecutive three-pointers to give Minot State a 12-point lead one minute later.

Minot State carried a 13-point lead going into the fourth quarter, as the Minnesota Crookston cut the lead down to six with 2:24 remaining. With the Golden Eagles fouling to extend the game, Minot State went six of eight down the stretch from the free throw line to clinch a 77-67 win.

Minot State shot 42.4 percent from the field and 77.8 percent from the free throw line while posting a dominant 46-26 advantage in rebounding over the Golden Eagles.
The Beavers outscored Minnesota Crookston in the paint (30-24) and in second chance points (18-7).

Denton followed Johnson in scoring for the Beavers with 15 points and six rebounds while Flowers registered her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Mariah Payne dished out a team-high six assists and added seven points.

The Beavers return to the Minot State Dome next weekend, as they take on Winona State on Friday, Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. and Upper Iowa on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 4 p.m.
