Huge Third Quarter Rally Carries Beavers to 76-50 Win

MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State women's basketball team outscored Winona State 18-3 in the third quarter, propelling the Beavers to a 76-50 win over Winona State on Friday night in the Minot State Dome.

The win pushes the Beavers to 10-9 (7-8 NSIC) on the season while the Warriors fall to 13-6 (9-6 NSIC).

Leading 13-12, Minot State rallied for a 10-0 run and capped the first quarter with a three-pointer from Holly Johnson to hold a 23-12 lead going into the second quarter.

The Warriors answered with an 8-0 run to start the second quarter, cutting Minot State's lead down to 23-20. Allie Pickrain knocked down a three-pointer with 3:04 left to trim Minot State's lead down to 34-33.

The Beavers ended the half on a jumper from Whitney Molina and layup by Johnson to take a 38-33 lead going into halftime.

Minot State opened the second half with an explosive 18-0 run that lasted the first nine minutes of the third quarter. Winona State scored their first points of the second half on a layup with 39 seconds left in the third quarter.

The momentum carried into the fourth quarter for the Beavers, as Minot State opened the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run. Diondra Denton and Mariah connected on three-pointers before Denton scored on a layup and Johnson connected on two free throws to extend the lead to 30 at 66-36.

Winona State outscored the Beavers 14-10 in the final 6:38 of the game, as the Beavers improved to 8-1 on the season when scoring 70 or more points.

Minot State shot 47.5 percent from the field while limiting the Warriors to 33.3 percent shooting and outrebounding Winona State 44-26.

Four Beavers scored in double-figures and 10 different Minot State players scored in the win.

Johnson posted her third double-double of the season, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Kari Clements poured in a season-high 14 points while grabbing four rebounds and dishing out three assists.

Mariah Payne scored 13 points and posted a team-high five assists, followed by Denton with 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Minot State returns to the court tomorrow, as the Beavers host Upper Iowa tomorrow in the Minot State Dome at 4 p.m.
