Beavers Drop Double Overtime Game at Minnesota Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. -- Senior Tyler Rudolph posted a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds, but Minnesota Duluth made 5-fo-6 free throw attempts in the second overtime as the Bulldogs defeated the Beavers 80-78 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game on Friday in Romano Gymnasium.

Minnesota Duluth, which improved to 10-15 overall and 6-13 in the NSIC, opened the second overtime by making five consecutive free throws to take an 80-75 lead. David Akibo drilled a three-pointer with 1.7 seconds to play, but the Bulldogs ran out the remainder of the game clock to secure the victory.

Minot State, which dropped to 17-8 overall and 11-8 in conference play, had opportunities to win the game at the end of regulation and at the end of the first overtime but came up short on both occasions.

Minot State was 0-for-7 from the floor in the second overtime before Akibo connected on the three-pointer. The Beavers shot 34.7 percent from the floor for the game and 30 percent from the free throw line.

Akibo and Luis Ricci Maia also posted a double-doubles for the Beavers. Akibo had 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Ricci Maia finished with 11 points and 10 assists. Russ Davis added 15 points for the Beavers.

Brandon Myer led Minnesota Duluth with 25 points and 15 rebounds and Jake Wilson scored 18 points.

The Bulldogs held a 13-point lead in the second half before the Beavers rallied to eventually tie the game.

Two free throws by Akibo and a three-point play by Rudolph got Minot State to within 45-39 with 11:32 to play in the second half.

A three-pointer by Wilson pushed the Bulldogs lead back to nine points and Minnesota Duluth upped the lead to 12 points on a layup by Trevor Entwisle with 7:03 remaining in regulation.

Davis hit back-to-back three-pointers for the Beavers to cut the lead to 54-48 at the 6:08 mark of the second half. Two free throws by Myer upped the Minnesota Duluth lead to 56-48, but the Beavers responded with an 11-2 run.

Davis made three free throws to cut the lead to 56-51 with 5:16 to play. After a jumper by Wilson increased the lead to 58-51, Rudolph hit back-to-back jumpers to get Minot State to within 58-55.

A free throw by Akibo and a layup by Rudolph tied the game at 58-58 with 3:14 remaining in regulation.

Myer put the Bulldogs back in front with a three-pointer, but Minot State made three free throws to tie the game at 63-63 at the 1:06 mark.

Minot State took a 65-63 lead on a layup by Rudolph, but Myer tied the game with a layup with 19 seconds to play to force overtime.

The Bulldogs held a three-point lead in the first overtime before Brandon Green connected on a three-pointer with 40 seconds to play to force the second overtime.

Minot State will return to action on Saturday (Feb. 10) when it visits St. Cloud State for an NSIC game beginning at 6 p.m.
