SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --
Justin Demary pitched a complete game in the opener and
Reilly O'Rourke permitted only one hit in 5.0 innings in game two leading Minot State to a doubleheader sweep of Northern State on Wednesday at Ronken Field as the Beavers extended their winning streak to 11 straight games. The Beavers won the opener 6-2 and completed the sweep with an 8-2 win in the second game to post the longest known winning streak since the 1967 season.
Demary worked all 7.0 innings in the opener and scattered seven hits while striking out eight batters to improve to 3-4 on the season. O'Rourke, who improved to 1-1 on the year with the win, allowed just one hit and struck out two in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Beavers, who improved to 16-10 overall and 14-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, banged out 19 hits and scored 14 runs in the two games.
Michael Borst and
Wyatt Schlosser each had a combined four hits, while
Celestino Rodriguez had three hits, including a home run.
GAME ONE
The Beavers wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as they tallied three runs in the top of the first inning of game one.
Trevaun Smith led off the game with a single and advanced to second on a Borst groundout.
Darrel Doll followed with a single to right-centerfield to bring home Smith giving the Beavers an early 1-0 lead. Rodriguez then blasted his fourth home run of the season to center to increase the Beavers lead to 3-0.
Minot State increased the lead to 5-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Borst led off the frame with a single and advanced to third when Rodriguez lined a double to left and trotted home on a Northern State error to increase the lead to 4-0. Schlosser followed with a double to right pushing the Beavers lead to 5-0.
After the Wolves touched Demary for two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Minot State answered with a run in the top of the sixth inning on a Borst RBI triple to increase the lead to 6-2.
Demary retired the final seven batters of the game, including two strikeouts, to nail down the win.
GAME TWO
Minot State broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the fourth inning of game two.
Borst singled to left to begin the inning and Doll reached on a bunt single to put two runners on the corners with no outs. Borst scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch, which also allowed Doll to advance to second base.
Schlosser singled up the middle to bring home Doll and
Zack Kunkel laced a home run to right to push the Beavers lead to 4-0.
Minot State extended the lead to 5-0 in the top of the fifth inning when Borst launched his second home run of the season to right.
The Beavers tacked on single runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings. Schlosser scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning and had an RBI bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning and Smith scored on an error in the ninth inning to close out the scoring.
Tannar Galey worked two innings of scoreless relief of O'Rourke, while
Jeremy Sylvester and
Jack Gamba each pitched a scoreless inning.
UP NEXT
The Beavers are scheduled to face Minnesota Duluth on Saturday (April 14) and Sunday (April 15) in a pair of NSIC doubleheaders at Corbett Field. Weather conditions in the area will dictate if, and where, those games will be played.
