WATFORD CITY, N.D. – The Minot State baseball team bounced back to win game two 13-9 after falling 5-3 in the first game of a doubleheader vs. Minnesota Duluth in Watford City, N.D. on Sunday afternoon.
The Beavers are now 17-11 overall and 15-3 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while the Bulldogs are now 15-15 overall and 11-7 in the NSIC.
Game One
Minnesota Duluth scored first in the top of the third inning on an RBI single before adding two runs in the fourth inning off a sacrifice bunt and RBI single to take a 3-0 lead.
Minot State answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, cutting UMD's lead to 3-2.
Darrel Doll and
Wyatt Schlosser reached base on walks before
Andrew Black hit a two-RBI double to center field.
The Bulldogs added two runs in the sixth inning off a Beaver throwing error and an RBI single, extending their lead to 5-2 over the Beavers.
The Beavers cut into the deficit with an RBI single from Black in the sixth inning, but could not pull off the comeback as the Beavers had their 11-game winning streak snapped in a 5-3 setback in game one.
Minot State scored three runs on five hits and committed three defensive errors in the loss.
Black led the Beavers at the plate with two hits and three RBIs while Doll, Schlosser and
Geordie McDougall recorded one hit apiece.
Andres Hackman fell to 3-4 on the season while surrendering five runs, three earned, on eight hits in 5.2 innings of work.
Brock Breshears pitched 1.1 perfect innings of relief on the mound.
Game Two
Minot State took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when
Celestino Rodriguez singled through the left side to score
Trevaun Smith.
UMD responded in the second inning with a solo home run to tie the game at one.
Smith opened the bottom of the third inning with a walk and reached second base on a failed pickoff attempt.
Michael Borst followed with a single, scoring Smith. Borst advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Doll.
The Bulldogs took their final lead of the game after scoring three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead over Minot State.
Justin Demary led off the fourth inning with an infield single before coming home to score on an RBI single from Smith. The Beavers added two more runs when Doll launched a 1-1 pitch over the fence in right center to take a 6-4 lead.
Minot State added to their lead in the fifth inning when
Logan Morse hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Schlosser.
Doll led off the sixth inning with a hit by pitch before Rodriguez reached on a single and Morse walked. Demary followed by smacking a 3-1 pitch to left field for a grand slam.
Borst extended Minot State's lead with a solo home run to left in the seventh inning and Schlosser scored on a wild pitch in the eighth inning to give Minot State an 11-4 advantage over the Bulldogs.
UMD cut into the Beaver lead with a grand slam before
Sam Larson struck out the final two batters to clinch the 13-9 victory for Minot State.
The Beavers scored 13 runs on 11 hits and committed four defensive errors.
Smith, Borst, Rodriguez and Demary notched two hits apiece to lead Minot State while Doll, Schlosser and Morse added one hit each. Demary recorded a team-high 4 RBIs while Doll added 3 RBIs.
Starter
Jaymon Cervantes improved to 3-0 on the season. Cervantes pitched 6.1 innings while striking out nine batters and giving up four runs on three hits.
Brock Breshears pitched 0.2 innings of relief while
Aaron Kern and Larson pitched one inning each.
