Beavers Claim Series with Offensive Explosion

WATFORD CITY, N.D. -- Ethan Fleming and Kyle Williamson combined to drive in 12 runs and Minot State claimed the series win over Minnesota Duluth with a 27-12 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over the Bulldogs on Monday in Watford City, N.D.

Fleming drove in a career-high seven runs and Williamson drove in a career-high five runs as Minot State pounded out 18 hits to register the most runs scored by a Beaver team since Minot State scored 36 runs against Bismarck in 1984. Fleming finished the game 3-for-5 with two runs scored, a home run and seven RBIs, while Williamson was 4-for-5 with four runs scored and five RBIs to pace the Beavers.

Minot State, which improved to 18-11 on the season and 16-3 in the NSIC, scored in every inning with the exception of the third. The Beavers tallied seven runs in the first and second innings and scored 10 runs in the sixth inning.

Williamson, Justin Demary, Wyatt Schlosser, Darrel Doll and Trevaun Smith each scored four runs for Minot State. Williamson led the hit parade with four, while Smith, Doll and Fleming each had three hits for the Beavers.

Minot State starter Reilly O'Rourke was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst as he picked up his second win of the season. He worked 4.0 innings and struck out six batters to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Minnesota Duluth, which dropped to 15-16 on the season and 11-8 in the NSIC, scored a run in the top of the first inning to take a brief 1-0 lead, but that would disappear quickly. Minot State tied the game three batters into the bottom of the first inning and took the lead for good three batters later.

Smith led off the inning for the Beavers with a single and Doll laced a double to plate Smith with Minot State's first run of the contest. After Schlosser walked, Doll came around to score on a failed pickoff attempt putting Minot State ahead 2-1.

Following a walk to Demary, Fleming hit third homer of the season, a three-run blast, giving Minot State a 5-1 lead. Dustin Wilcox drew a free pass and Williamson capped the inning with a two-run homer upping the Beavers lead to 7-1.

After the Bulldogs scored in the top of the second inning, the Beavers responded with seven more runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Doll increased his NSIC-leading home run total to eight when he hit a solo shot with one out to increase the lead to 8-2. Fleming had his second hit in as many innings, when he roped a double that brought home Demary and Schlosser to push the margin to 10-2.

Williamson kept pace with Fleming as he also doubled, which scored Wilcox and Fleming increasing the lead to 12-2. Smith hit an RBI single and later scored on a Bulldog fielding error upping the margin to 14-2.

The Bulldogs scored three straight runs to cut the lead to 10-5, but the Beavers got a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning when Michael Borst hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Williamson.

Demary, who hit his first career home run on Sunday, hit his second in as many days giving the Beavers a 17-5 lead after five innings.

Minnesota Duluth scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to climb to within 17-9, but Minot State responded with a 10-run inning to blow the game open.

Fleming had a two-run single, Celestino Rodriguez and Borst had RBI singles and Williamson and Smith each had an RBI double during the inning.

Minot State is scheduled to face Bemidji State on Wednesday (April 18) in Minot and then play a weekend series at Sioux Falls beginning on Saturday (April 21).
