MINOT, N.D. --
Michael Borst drove in five runs and
Wyatt Schlosser had six hits and drove in three runs as Minot State swept Bemidji State in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader on Thursday at Corbett Field in its home opener. Minot State won the opener 10-5 and completed the sweep with a 13-7 win in game two.
The Beavers played at Corbett Field for the first time this season marking a span of almost a year since Minot State had played on its home turf. The last home game for the Beavers at Corbett Field was played on April 30 of last season when it swept Mary.
With the two wins, Minot State improved to 20-11 overall and 18-3 in the NSIC which marked the first time in the NCAA Division II era that the Beavers have posted back-to-back 20-win seasons. It also marks the first time that Minot State has won at least 20 games in back-to-back seasons since the 1975 and 1976 seasons.
The Beavers recorded 26 hits in the doubleheader sweep led by Schlosser who had six hits.
Celestino Rodriguez had five hits, while Borst finished the day with four hits.
GAME ONE
As has become the custom of this year's edition of Minot State baseball, the Beavers rallied to win the opener. After falling behind 4-0, the Beavers came back to post the 10-5 win.
Minot State cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth inning. Borst led off the inning with a double and
Darrel Doll was hit by a pitch to put a pair of runners on base. After Bemidji State turned a double play, Schlosser doubled to left-centerfield to bring home Borst with the Beavers first run of the contest.
Andrew Black hit a chopper in front of the plate and the Bemidji State catchers throw sailed past the first baseman allowing Schlosser to score.
Minot State would take the lead for good with a four-run fifth inning.
Dustin Wilcox ripped a double to being the inning and advanced to third on a groundout by
Kyle Williamson. The Beavers loaded the bases when
Trevaun Smith walked and Borst was hit by a pitch.
Doll singled to rightfield to tie the score at 4-4 when Wilcox and Smith scored and Rodriguez put the Beavers in front when he singled in Borst. Black capped the inning for Minot State with an RBI groundout that brought home Doll and increased the Beaver lead to 6-4.
Minot State added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to blow the game open. Borst had a two-run single and Rodriguez and Black added RBI hits as the Beavers took a 10-4 lead.
After surrendering four early runs, Minot State starter
Justin Demary took control of the game over the middle innings. He retired eight straight batters over the middle innings, while his teammates scored eight runs. Demary worked 7.0 innings and allowed three earned runs and struck out eight to improve to 4-4 on the season.
GAME TWO
Minot State had to once again come from behind as Bemidji State scored three runs in the top of the first inning.
Minot State responded with four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead. Smith started the inning with a double and scored when Borst followed with a single up the middle.
After Borst stole second, Doll drew a walk and Rodriguez singled to left scoring Borst to cut the Bemidji State lead to 3-2. Schlosser then roped a double down the rightfield line, which tied the game when Doll scored.
Demary capped the Beaver first inning when an RBI groundout that plated Rodriguez and put Minot State in front 4-3.
Bemidji State (4-26, 2-12 NSIC) regained the lead with two runs in the third inning and a run in the fourth inning. Minot State would answer with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game.
Logan Morse led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Ethan Fleming. Williamson was hit by a pitch and Smith walked to load the bases and Borst tied the game at 6-6 when he lifted a sacrifice fly to right.
Minot State took the lead for good in the sixth inning when Smith hit an RBI single that scored Fleming giving the Beavers a 7-6 lead.
Minot State then tallied four runs in the seventh inning and two more in the eighth inning to push the lead to 13-6.

Minot State returns to action on Saturday (April 21) and Sunday (April 22) when it hosts Sioux Falls in a four-game series at Corbett Field. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1:30 p.m. and Sunday's doubleheader will begin at 12 p.m.
