SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Junior
Andres Hackman threw a complete-game and Minot State defeated Minnesota State 5-2 in an elimination game on Thursday afternoon at Karras Park in Sioux Falls, S.D. to stay alive in the 2018 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference baseball tournament.
The Beavers advanced to 32-15 on the season and will play again tonight against the loser of Augustana and St. Cloud State. The game is set to begin 45 minutes after the conclusion of the Vikings-Huskies matchup at 4 p.m.
Hackman surrendered two runs on seven hits and struck out five Maverick batters in the nine innings of work.
Minot State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of runs.
Trevaun Smith and
Michael Borst led off the game with back-to-back walks before
Justin Demary doubled them home to give the Beavers a 2-0 advantage.
Minnesota State trimmed the deficit in half in the next inning on an RBI single to make it a 2-1 game.
Dustin Wilcox led off the fifth inning with a double before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Smith to double the lead to 3-1.
The Beavers continued to add to their lead when
Celestino Rodriguez reached base on a walk before
Darrel Doll lifted an 0-1 pitch over the fence in left center for a two-run home run to give Minot State a 5-1 lead.
The Mavericks led off the seventh inning with a single and RBI double, but could only produce one run, as Hackman retired the next three batters to hold off the Maverick rally.
Hackman held the Mavericks scoreless in the final two innings to clinch the 5-2 victory over Minnesota State.
Doll led the Beavers at the plate with two hits while four Beavers totaled one hit apiece. Doll and Demary led the Beavers with two RBIs while Smith notched one RBI.
Minot State returns to action tonight against the loser of Augustana and St. Cloud State. The two teams play at 4 p.m. with the Beavers taking on the loser 45 minutes later. Links to live stats and video are available on msubeavers.com.
