SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Minot State baseball team opened the 2018 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference baseball tournament with a 13-6 setback vs. Northern State at Karras Park in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The loss moves the Beavers to an elimination game vs. the loser of No. 4 seed Minnesota State vs. No. 5 seed Concordia-St. Paul tomorrow at noon.
Northern State opened the scoring in the second inning with three runs on four hits before adding two runs in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead.
Trevaun Smith reached in the bottom of the third on a strikeout and wild pitch before advancing to third on a failed pickoff attempt.
Michael Borst followed with an RBI single to give Minot State their first run of the game.
The Wolves added to their lead in the fifth inning with three runs on three hits and a Minot State error to extend their lead to 8-1.
The Beavers responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Dustin Wilcox and
Ethan Fleming reached on back-to-back singles before Borst connected on a two-RBI single up the middle.
Justin Demary walked in the bottom of the sixth and scored on an RBI single from Wilcox, trimming the NSU lead to 8-4.
Northern State answered with two runs in the next half inning to take a 10-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
Following a walk to Demary,
Kyle Williamson smack a two-run home run over the wall in left to trim the deficit to 10-6.
The Wolves plated three runs on three hits and a Minot State error in the top of the ninth inning to clinch the 13-6 win over the Beavers.
Demary was tagged with in the loss in the start while allowing five runs on nine hits in 2.1 innings of work.
Brock Breshears and
Wyatt Moore combined to throw the next four innings while
Tannar Galey,
Zach Newman and
Lane Biggs pitched the final 2.2 innings.
Borst led the Beavers at the plate with two hits and three RBIs. Wilcox recorded a team-high three hits and Williamson added two RBIs.
Darrel Doll, Williamson and Fleming posted one hit apiece.
