MOORHEAD, Minn. --
Hayley Swain recorded 13 kills and
Shelby Spuller added 11 kills as Minot State won its first match of the 2018 season with a 25-15, 22-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-8 victory over Western State in the Microtel and Travelodge Classic in Nemzek Fieldhouse on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Minot State took a 1-0 lead by cruising to a 25-15 win in the opening set
- Western State used a late rally in the second set to post a 25-22 win
- The Beavers surged back in front and took a 2-1 lead on the strength of a 25-19 win in the third set
- Western State held off a Beaver rally in the fourth set to win 25-21 and even the match at 2-2
- The Beavers secured their first win of the season with a 15-8 win in the fifth set
BEAVER TRACKS
- Kelsey Dewulf and Shelby Spuller each recorded double-doubles for the Beavers
- Dewulf had 42 assists and 12 digs
- Spuller finished with 11 kills and 11 digs
- Hayley Swain led Minot State with 13 kills
- Karli Koza reached the 20-dig plateau for the second straight match as she notched 22 digs
- Swain and Spuller paced the Beavers blocking efforts with three each
TEAM NOTES
- The Beavers hit .164 for the match
- Minot State hit a blistering .471 in the final set with eight kills and no attack errors in 17 attempts
- Minot State held a commanding 72-51 advantage in digs
- The Beavers held a slim 5-4 advantage in blocks

Minot State will conclude play in the tournament with a pair of matches on Saturday (Aug. 25). The Beavers open the day against Montana State-Billings at 9 a.m. and then face South Dakota Mines at 2:30 p.m.
