Spuller Breaks School Record in Win over SD Mines

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Shelby Spuller broke the Minot State NCAA Division II era school record for kills in a match as she notched 31 in the Beavers 25-21, 25-23, 27-29, 25-18 victory over South Dakota Mines on Saturday in the Microtel and Travelodge Classic in Nemzek Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Minot State jumped out to an early lead as it won the first set 25-21 as the Beavers hit .312 as a team and Shelby Spuller had five kills
  • Minot State closed the second set with a 5-1 run to claim a 25-23 win and increase the lead to 2-0
  • South Dakota Mines won the third set 29-27 despite Shelby Spuller recording 10 kills
  • The Beavers clinched the match by coasting to a 25-18 win in the fourth set as Shelby Spuller finished off her day by posting 11 kills
BEAVER TRACKS
  • Shelby Spuller set a Minot State DII era record with 31 kills in the win, which topped the previous record of 30 set by Mallory Sall against Mary in 2012
  • Shelby Spuller was named to the Microtel and Travelodge All-Tournament team after recording 63 kills and averaging 3.50 kills per set over the Beavers four matches
  • Emily Falldorf and Nicole Wondrasek each had nine kills for the Beavers
  • Karli Koza led four players in double figures in digs with 21. Kelsey Dewulf (13), Shae Pedersen (12) and Mekayla Gurley (10) also reached double figures
  • Kelsey Dewulf notched her second double-double of the season with 55 assists and 13 digs. The 55 assists is tied for eighth best in school history
  • Emily Falldorf topped the Beavers with three blocks
TEAM NOTES
  • Minot State finished the tournament with a 2-2 record
  • Minot State hit .312 in the opening set and .382 in the fourth set and finished the match with a .228 attack percentage
  • Minot State held a 64-54 advantage in kills
  • The Beavers led 82-63 in digs
UP NEXT
Minot State will compete in the Rosella Meier Classic hosted by Nebraska Kearney. The Beavers will open the tournament against Newman and will also face South Dakota Mines, Nebraska Kearney and Midwestern State.
