Against Division One Foe, Beavers Have Strong First Quarter Before Fading

(Edinburg, TX) -- The Beavers fell in their second game in as many nights when they took on division one opponent, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

In the first quarter, the Beavers and Vaqueros were going back and forth in scoring. With the score at 16-12, UTRGV, senior guard Mariah Payne made a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one. After a missed layup and a pair of fouls on the Vaqueros, Payne was sent to the line to shoot two free-throws. She sank the first one and missed the second. Sophomore forward Mollie Wilson grabbed the offensive rebound and made the putback layup to take the lead 18-16. As the quarter came to an end, Minot State led 22-20. Junior forward Calli Delsman led the Beavers in scoring with seven points.

At the start of the second quarter, the Vaqueros went on an 18-0 run giving them a 38-22 lead. Delsman stopped the run by hitting back to back three-pointers, bringing the score back within ten points. It would not last, however, as the Vaqueros went on another run, ending the second quarter 45-28. The UTRGV defense forced 11 steals in that quarter, and the Beavers shot 2-11 from the field.

At the beginning of the third quarter, senior Haley Hildenbrand made a jumper to start the scoring for the Beavers. UTRGV continued to answer back with points of their own. UTRGV outscored the Beavers 19-13, resulting in the Vaqueros leading 64-41 at the end of the third quarter. Hildenbrand led the Beavers in scoring with seven points.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Beavers scored on back-to-back possessions with a pair of layups from sophomore Anna Counts and Delsman, cutting the deficit to 64-45. The Vaqueros continued to answer back with points of their own. The deficit was too large for the Beavers to make a comeback. Minot State outscored the Vaqueros 15-11 and shot 38% from the field. Freshman Soda Rice scored her first collegiate career point by making a layup with the assist coming from Senior Danielle Rizzari. Minot State lost the game 75-56.
